    The Process

Our method of application for block paving includes a simple and well structured six step process. Following this allows us to concentrate on getting each stage exactly right. Here’s how we do it:

Free site survey – we carry out all measurements and risk assessments at planning stage. We also mark out the area and evaluate drainage options, block sizes, colours and finishes. It is our belief that discussing the finer details from the outset allows us to put our best foot forward for your project.

Excavation – prior to this stage, we scan the area for gas, water, electric and utilities wires, ensuring that there is no disruption. We then dig out to the correct depths. We do these groundworks ourselves as we believe it’s best to be involved in each element of the works, without having to rely on another contractor to do parts of the job. At this stage we lay a porous membrane to stop our Type 1 sub-base mixing with the underlying ground.

Sub-base – we typically use an MOT Type 1 hard core or recycled crushed concrete (at a maximum of 20mm) for sub-bases, but it does depend on the chosen surface finish and drainage requirements. We lay our sub-base at a minimum depth of 100mm (approximately 4 inches) in compliance with laying guidelines. To combat the risk of sinking, we compact thoroughly at this stage.

Kerbs and edging – although not an essential, kerbs act as retainer, while edging can be decorative. The latter is laid on a solid concrete base to ensure that there’s no movement. Both kerbs and edging come in a variety of options so that we can match your desired finish.

Drainage and manholes – we always take drainage into consideration, as it is a vital part of the process. Because of its anti-rust properties, and because it is hard-wearing and crack-resistant, we only use stainless steel metal linear drains. We also replace existing manholes with recess manholes that are designed to fit in keeping with the surface we apply, retaining that all important access to drains.

Block laying – having screened your final base, we lay the blocks in your chosen pattern and carry out all the cuts. For the final finish, all blocks are fully compacted down, and jointing is carried out with a kiln-dried red sand, which prevents any further block movement.

    Additional Care

To reduce the risk of discolouration and weed growth, we seal the block pave using a high-quality sealer with a long lifespan. Please note that this service comes at an additional cost and is not included in our standard quotes.
